Running Accomplishments:

1:28:50 half marathon, 3:15:55 marathon Also Completed the Ironman Triathlon ( Ironman USA Lake Placid).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Knock 16 minutes off my marathon time and go sub 2:59:59 in the Flying Pig marathon May of 2010.  Maintain at least 1 bike and swim per week while training for the Pig and resume tri specific training mid-May to compete in a couple half Ironman distances over the summer of 2010.

Long-Term Running Goals:

To maintain good health have fun , travel to some cool placs to race and hopefully get a little faster in the process. Qualify for the Ironman World championships as an age grouper and compete in the HAWAII IRONMAN!!!

Personal:

Married to a beautiful woman and have two great kids fortunatley they look like their mother !!

Zach - to answer your question. I think it is within possibllity for you to run 3:15 in 5 months. However, in training it is not a good idea to set deadlines. Man sets deadlines, but God does not always honor them. Running distance is one area where this principle is particularly evident - you are mostly dealing with the laws of God rather than the laws of man, so trying to force your deadlines is rather futile.

That said, I think consistent training can overtime get you to 3:15 or possibly much faster.

Regarding training - until you can jog about 60 miles a week without being injured or extremely fatigued, speed work is not helpful or necessary if you are training for a longer race. Up to that point it is not your speed that holds you back, it is your lack of endurance.

To illustrate my point, go to the track and run a mile all out. Then let's do the math to see if speed is what you lack.

Even when you add speedwork, if you do not pad it with slower running or at least some endurance cross-training, your chances of injury are high, and your aerobic development does not happen. With the padding, you end up running about 50-60 miles a week.
